Monotyping | 2002

I start with painting a canvas using acrylic paint. The process and time are determined from the painting itself, from the action of painting. I paint an abstract theme using several colors. I paint using only one brush mixing the colors on the canvas. After finishing the painting, I leave to a separate room. I return running, naked and throw myself against the canvas. Immediately after that I throw myself against another wall at the other side of the room transferring the painting with my body. I keep throwing my body against the painting and the wall at the other side of the room to the limits of my body’s resistance. In the moment that I can no longer throw myself, I leave the room ending the Performance.

This performance was initially created as a video performance with a fixed video camera registering all the action. Accepting an invitation to participate at the MIP Festival (International Performance Expression) in 2003, I have presented the performance live. 

The performance started with the painting work I was developing at the time, a mixture of painting and monotype. Reflecting on the traces of autobiography in these works, I came to the conclusion that they were actions of painting and the making of the monotype. Therefore I aimed to amplify this action for beyond the painting and monotype, turning the action itself the main engine of the work. In this way, from the painting and monotype on canvas, I changed to paint on a big screen on the wall expanding the monotype to the big room with my body. My body assuming the status of it’s own body, makes the monotype extracting the ink of the painted screen and printing it in another wall.
